(2:00PM) IOT for crop improvement and smart-farming - Sensor technologies and their architectures, often together called the Internet of Things, enable researchers to measure the world with great precision and at scales that were hardly possible just a few years ago. But many questions still remain about how to design and deploy IoT architectures effectively for food security research. In this session we will look at the design precepts and success factors for IoT architectures bridging agronomy, breeding, and landscape scales.

(2:45PM) How can we build ethical, trustworthy digital advisory services? - New digital communications channels make it possible to reach rural farmers with agricultural advisory content and hold the potential to help tailor advice to specific farmers’ contexts, by location and season. Some evidence of good practices is emerging for use of these tools, yet the field overall still struggles with fostering the kinds of interactivity and engagement needed to effect large-scale change in farming systems. In this session we will examine the state of the evidence, promising models, and the notion of a trustworthy digital advisory system.
